How to play DUtch joker poker©?

To start playing Dutch Joker Poker you need a deck of cards with 57 cards in it, 52 numbered cards and 5 jokers all with different colors. In Dutch Joker Poker the 5 jokers each have a name, color and in descending order of importance they are:

1. Orange Willem
2. Purple Peter
3. Blue Bas
4. White Wim
5. Red Rick

The first three Jokers (Orange Willem, Purple Peter and Blue Bas) are proud and loud Jokers who aren’t afraid to show themselves, so the backside of their cards have a different color than the rest of the 54 cards left in the deck. White Wim and Red Rick are mischievous and sneaky, and love to be inconspicuous and blend themselves with the other cards, so they have the same backside as the other 52 numbered cards in the deck.

Afterwards you need to decide which version of poker you’re going to play, is it going to be Texas Hold’em style, or you prefer Omaha more? If 7-Card stud, 5-Card Draw or even High/Low Chicago is your favorite poker version, go ahead play Dutch Joker Poker with your version of poker, just know that in Dutch Joker Poker there are some rules that are different and valid in any of the version of poker that you choose to play.

Hand rankings in Dutch Joker Poker (from 1 to 10 in descending order of importance, with the most important first):

1. Five of a Kind: 5 cards of same number

In Dutch Joker Poker: 5 Queens is the highest hand you can get. After 5 Queens comes 5 Aces, then 5 Kings, etc..

Five of a Kind is higher than Orange Willem, Royal Flush & Straight Flush when the hand comprises of the 4 original cards + 1 Joker.

Five of a Kind made with 2 Jokers is only higher than Royal Flush or Straight Flush when the Royal Flush or Straight Flush has more Jokers in hand. That’s why Five of a Kind with 2 (or more) Jokers can never be higher than Orange Willem and a Royal Flush or Straight Flush made with 2 or less Jokers.

2. Straight Flush: 5 consecutive numbers in a row and all from the same suit

Orange Willem is the highest possible Royal Flush, which is a hand from then to ace with the same suits, but only when the ace is Orange Willem and with no other Jokers in hand. With more Jokers the hand is just called a Royal Flush.

Royal Flush in a hand comprised with original cards is higher than a hand of equal rank comprised with one or more Jokers in hand. The exception here being a hand that is Orange Willem is higher than a Royal Flush in a hand comprised of all original cards.

Straight Flush in a hand comprised with original cards is higher than a hand with a straight flush comprised of one or more Jokers.

3. Four of a Kind: 4 cards with the same number

In Dutch Joker Poker you cannot have a Four of a Kind made with original cards and a Four of a Kind of equal rank made with one or more Jokers. So in a game with Four of a Kind hands against each other, the hand with the highest face value wins and it does not matter if the highest ranked Four of a Kind is made with four Jokers or four original cards.

4. Full House

Full House comprised with original cards is always higher than Full House of equal rank, made with one or more Jokers.

5. Flush

Flush comprised with original cards is higher than a Flush made with one or more Jokers in hand.

To determine the winning Flush hand comprised with equal amounts of Jokers in hand, the one with the highest ranked Joker(s) in it wins.

6. Straight

Straight comprised with original cards is higher than a Straight made with one or more Jokers in hand.

To determine the winning Straight hand comprised with equal amounts of Jokers in hand, the one with the highest ranked Joker(s) in it wins.

7. Three of a Kind

Three of a Kind comprised with original cards is higher than a Three of a Kind of equal rank, made with one or three Jokers.

To determine the winning Three of a Kind hand of equal rank comprised with same amounts of Jokers in hand, the one with the highest ranked Joker(s) wins.

8. Two Pair

In Dutch Joker Poker, if you’re playing with people who understands the game, you will never get a Two Pair hand made with Jokers. If you have One Pair with original cards in hand, together with one Joker, you make Three of a Kind, and if you have two Jokers in hand, you also seek to make at least Three of a Kind, not a hand with only Two Pair made.

9. One Pair

One Pair comprised with original cards is higher than One Pair of equal rank, made with one Joker.

To determine the winning One Pair hand of equal rank comprised with a Joker in hand, the one with the highest ranked Joker wins.

10. High Card

In Dutch Joker Poker every Joker can make at least a One Pair hand, so a hand with a Joker in it always wins with a hand with only a High Card.
